Building a Better Photon-Counting CT System Begins at the

(X-ray) Source

Photon Counting CT (PCCT) offers significant advantages over conventional CT, providing spectral information without a dedicated dual energy protocol, delivering high resolution, and reducing image noise for quality images at lower doses. Clinically, these benefits improve diagnosis by allowing earlier detection through spectral data that differentiates cancerous masses from benign cysts.

PCCT can also potentially double spatial resolution without substantially increasing radiation dose, which is crucial for applications requiring detailed visualization, such as brain imaging, lung fissures, and cardiac stents.

Focused on the X-ray Tube

“The X-ray tube and focal spot size are critically important in PCCT, which makes Dunlee’s commitment to quality and reliability even more essential,” notes Robert Bayerlein, Dunlee Senior Product Manager for CT. “In traditional CT, spatial resolution is mainly determined by the detector. However, for optimal spatial resolution in PCCT, X-ray sources need very small focal spots that can deliver sufficient power. This presents challenges, as smaller focal spots can lead to overheating and rapid wear, resulting in tube failures or interrupted scans. Therefore, advanced tube design combined with intelligent monitoring and control of the X-segment are essential for operational efficiency”

Dunlee has addressed this with its Xpert Bundles featuring the CT6000, CT6500, and CT8000 tubes, designed for high-resolution PCCT systems. These tubes utilize sophisticated models, developed with artificial intelligence to manage all relevant parameters during operation, ensuring high kW power on extra-small focal spots without compromising tube life.

Dunlee’s extra-small focal spots meet diverse CT application needs, providing options ranging from a large 1.1 x 1.2 focal spot at 120 kW for high throughput to a 0.4 x 0.5 focal spot for ultra-high resolution imaging, offering full flexibility for clinical requirements.
