Bayer has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its MEDRAD Centargo CT contrast injection system, a device designed to streamline workflow in high-volume radiology settings.
The multi-patient injector aims to alleviate the operational challenges posed by the shortage of radiology technologists in the U.S., particularly as demand for imaging services rises. The system integrates with Bayer’s product portfolio to enhance efficiency and reduce the workload on radiology staff.
The MEDRAD Centargo CT injection system is designed to reduce patient setup time, which Bayer reports can be completed in under two minutes. Key features include an auto-priming patient line that readies the system for the next patient in 20 seconds, as well as an integrated barcode reader that streamlines data entry and ensures traceability when paired with Bayer’s Automated Documentation software.

According to Bayer, since its initial release in 2020, the system has been used with approximately seven million patients across 49 countries.
Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto was the first hospital in North America to implement the system, using it in both acute care and outpatient settings. Mike Minoo, manager of CT and interventional radiology at Sunnybrook, described the system’s ease of use as beneficial for both patient care and workflow efficiency, noting that it allows clinicians to dedicate more time to patient interactions.
In addition to workflow benefits, the MEDRAD Centargo system includes advanced safety features, such as dual check valves to prevent cross-contamination and air detection and removal technology. The system has also earned recognition for its design and sustainability, receiving both a Red Dot Design Award and an AmeriStar Award for its packaging.
