The Mount Sinai Health System in New York City has launched a 12-story, 65,000-square-foot center that will house 40 principal investigators alongside 250 researchers, scientists, and support staff.

The Hamilton and Amabel James Center for Artificial Intelligence and Human Health, located on the campus of Mount Sinai Hospital, is among the first in the U.S. to focus on AI research within a medical school.

Funded by a donation from Hamilton "Tony" James, executive vice chairman of Blackstone, and his wife, Amabel, the center aims to integrate AI with genomics, imaging, and data science to improve disease diagnosis and treatment.

Key programs at the center include the Windreich Department of AI and Human Health, the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health, and the Institute for Genomic Health. These programs focus on applying machine learning across medical fields, advancing genomic research, and exploring digital health solutions such as wearable technology.

“This center allows us to revolutionize how we diagnose and treat diseases, including some of the most debilitating illnesses,” said Dr. Eric Nestler, director of the Friedman Brain Institute and chief scientific officer at Mount Sinai. “This is a critical moment for digital health leadership.”

The AI initiatives at Mount Sinai also include projects like NutriScan, a machine learning tool that improves malnutrition diagnosis and earned the Hearst Health Prize in 2024.
