Aspirus Wausau Hospital is set to begin a $227 million expansion aimed at addressing rising critical care demands and enhancing access to specialized services in Northcentral Wisconsin.

“This expansion positions Aspirus Wausau Hospital as the destination for specialized health care in Northcentral Wisconsin," said hospital president and CEO, Matt Heywood. "It is a direct response to the growing needs of our patients and communities. By increasing capacity and access to advanced technology, we are ensuring timely care and creating efficiencies that benefit everyone.”

The plan includes several key upgrades:

– Increased capacity: The addition of 48 intermediate care beds and a 16-bed observation unit, with future provisions for expanding the Intensive Care Unit.

– Advanced imaging capabilities: A fixed PET/CT scanner will be installed to enhance cancer care and reduce the need for patient travel for critical diagnostics.

– Specialized care spaces: Redesigned units will aim to improve support for care teams and drive better patient outcomes.

– Expanded surgical facilities: Upgraded spaces will address rising patient demand and improve operational workflows.

The expansion is the largest investment in Aspirus’ history and reflects the organization’s long-term strategy to meet the evolving needs of its patient population, particularly as the region faces an aging population and increasingly complex health care demands.

“This expansion is designed for flexibility and foresight,” Heywood said. “It will enhance patient flow, improve care transitions, and strengthen collaboration across our specialized care teams. By providing better tools and resources, we are empowering our staff to deliver the highest level of care efficiently and effectively.”

Construction will proceed in phases to minimize disruption to hospital operations, with updates shared regularly to keep the community informed. Aspirus also noted that the upgrades will help position the hospital as a regional leader in areas like neuroscience and heart care, aligning with its broader mission of delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
