Increased Interest for Training in Urologic Ultrasound

New ultrasound guided

patients with urologic disease
New ultrasound guided therapies require adequate training to manage patients with urologic disease, and interest in curricula development for this specialty for medical student level through post-graduate education is on the rise.

A six-year study at Geisinger Health System Urologic Residency Program examined case logs for specific ultrasound CPT codes both before and after the implementation of educational curricula in ultrasound. The curriculum included lectures on ultrasound physics, indications and information on CPT coding.

The group successfully completed the educational process with greater than 500 proctored urologic ultrasound procedures. A recommendation to perform more than 400 proctored urologic ultrasound procedures over a four-year program is recommended to satisfy any regulatory expectations for skills verification.
