Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah has officially broken ground on its second Comprehensive Cancer Center, expanding access to cancer care and research across Utah County.
The new 272,000-square-foot facility, located in Vineyard, Utah, is expected to open in fall 2028.
The center is intended to ease the travel burden for patients in central and southern Utah, many of whom currently travel over an hour each way to receive care in Salt Lake City. In 2024 alone, Huntsman Cancer Institute hosted more than 40,000 patient visits from Utah County and nearby areas.

The Vineyard site will offer a broad range of services in its initial phase, including multidisciplinary cancer clinics, radiation oncology, cancer imaging, infusion, pharmacy, and an acute care clinic. The facility will also include wellness programs and early detection services, with infrastructure in place to support future research expansion and training partnerships with nearby universities.
“This new location brings comprehensive cancer care closer to the communities we serve,” said Mary Beckerle, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Huntsman Cancer Institute. “We will advance innovative research and train the next generation of scientists and health workers.”
The project represents the largest single investment in the institute’s history, with $400 million allocated for site development and construction. The effort was initiated by a $75 million lead matching gift from the Huntsman Family Foundation and has received additional funding from the State of Utah, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and several private donors.
Layton Construction has been selected as the contractor, with design by Architectural Nexus and landscape work by Sasaki. The facility will be part of the larger Utah City development.
Huntsman Cancer Institute remains the only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Mountain West region, serving patients from five surrounding states. The new site aims to strengthen its reach amid rapid population growth across the region.
