The West Virginia University Health System has announced more than $460 million in capital projects slated for development across five counties, extending a multiyear effort to broaden healthcare access and services throughout the state.
The latest plans follow a $400 million investment disclosed in 2024. Together, the two rounds mark nearly $1 billion allocated over two years toward infrastructure and service expansion.
“Expanding access to care in West Virginia isn’t just a goal — it’s our responsibility,” said Albert L. Wright Jr., president and CEO of the WVU Health System. “This investment in our mission and infrastructure allows us to better meet the growing needs of the communities we serve.”

The new projects include:
Berkeley County: A $200.9 million patient tower at Berkeley Medical Center will increase inpatient capacity from 190 to 316 beds, eliminate semiprivate rooms, and upgrade emergency department flow. It also includes a new linear accelerator for cancer treatment and expanded parking. Completion is expected in early 2028.
Jefferson County: Jefferson Medical Center will see a $60 million ambulatory campus expansion with new medical office space, infusion and cancer care services, and infrastructure updates. It is scheduled for completion by late 2027.
Ohio County: Two projects in Wheeling include a $122.6 million outpatient cancer center on the former Ohio Valley Medical Center site, consolidating oncology services from Wheeling and Reynolds Memorial hospitals, and a separate $16.6 million outpatient pediatrics center on the Wheeling Hospital campus. The centers are expected to open in October 2028 and November 2026, respectively.
Harrison County: A new outpatient surgery center adjacent to United Hospital Center will house eight operating rooms and support orthopedic and other specialty procedures. The $48 million facility is slated for completion in December 2026.
Nicholas County: A $16 million redevelopment at Summersville Regional Medical Center will establish a branch of the WVU Cancer Institute, offering oncology, rehabilitation, cardiac rehab, and imaging services. The project is expected to finish by September 2026.
