RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey are set to open the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center in late spring 2025, marking the debut of the state’s first freestanding cancer hospital.

The 12-story, 520,000-square-foot facility is located in New Brunswick and is designed to consolidate cancer treatment, research, and support services under one roof.

Developed in partnership with the New Brunswick Development Corporation, the new center brings together the clinical and research strengths of RWJBarnabas Health and Rutgers Cancer Institute, New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. The facility aims to streamline collaboration between providers and researchers, with the goal of enhancing both patient care and scientific discovery.

“This building will allow us to bring world-class care and research into one space, improving outcomes for patients across the region,” said Rutgers Cancer Institute director Steven Libutti.

The Morris Center will offer inpatient and outpatient care, diagnostic services, and a range of oncology support programs, including wellness and community education initiatives. The design prioritizes patient experience, with features like naturally lit patient rooms and treatment areas aimed at creating a calming environment.

In addition to clinical care, the center will house laboratory facilities for 10 research teams, clinical trial offices, and faculty workspaces, supporting translational research efforts. Advanced medical technology at the site will include an MRI linear accelerator, brachytherapy equipment, mammography and CT machines, and integrated smart technology for operational efficiency.

The hospital is named after Jack and Sheryl Morris, recognizing their philanthropic contributions and longstanding support of development in New Brunswick. Patients will begin receiving care at the new facility later this spring, with appointment details provided via MyChart and provider notifications.

The Morris Center is part of RWJBarnabas Health’s broader $1.5 billion oncology expansion, which includes additional projects like the Melchiorre Cancer Center in Livingston and the Specialty and Cancer Care Center on the Vogel Medical Campus, both expected to open over the next two years.
