Biograph Trinion PET/CT from Siemens Healthineers
Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are doing the lion's share of servicing on PET/CT systems in the U.S., according to IMV Medical Information’s 2025 PET Market Summary Report.
The analysis found that in 2024, 75% of PET systems were maintained by OEMs, while 15% were serviced in-house and another 15% by third-party providers, (the total percentages exceed 100% due to multiple service arrangements per system).
Breakdowns by facility type show that service practices vary significantly. Larger hospitals — those with 400 or more beds — had the highest rate of in-house servicing, at 29%, while independent PET sites relied most heavily on independent service organizations (ISOs), with 24% of systems supported by these providers.
By comparison:
Hospitals with fewer than 200 beds relied on OEMs for 85% of systems, with only 11% serviced in-house.
Hospital-owned PET centers showed similar trends, with 76% supported by OEMs and 12% managed internally.
Among mid-sized hospitals (200 to 399 beds), OEM support stood at 77%, with 20% in-house and 13% ISO.
The report also suggests little year-over-year change from 2023 in the overall mix of service providers.
Data from IMV’s 2023 Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Service Outlook Report adds context to service contract structures for post-warranty systems. That report found 48% of PET systems were covered under modality-specific agreements offered by vendors supporting multiple imaging types, while 43% were under broader multimodality contracts. Only 7% were covered by PET-specific providers, and 2% operated under time and materials terms.

Common elements in PET/CT service contracts include preventive maintenance during and after business hours, technical phone support, OEM parts, and software updates. However, no single support component was included in more than 70% of contracts, highlighting variation among service providers.
The findings underscore the continued reliance on OEMs and the complexity of service arrangements, both of which remain central to ownership decisions for PET/CT systems.
