Duke Health has started construction on a new inpatient facility at its existing Cary, North Carolina location, adding hospital services aimed at accommodating the area’s rapid population growth.

The expansion marks phase one of a broader plan for the 85-acre Duke Health Cary campus. The facility will include an emergency department, imaging, surgical services, and a limited number of inpatient beds. It will also offer gastrointestinal endoscopy, cancer treatment, and infusion services. The building is expected to open in 2027.

The health system received state approval for 40 inpatient beds at the site and projects that, once fully developed, the Cary campus will support approximately 1,600 jobs.
“In 2022, we were excited to open Duke Health Cary with several clinics including primary care, pediatric care, and urgent care,” said Morgan Jones, chief strategy officer for Duke University Health System. “This next phase of the campus provides a convenient option for emergency and inpatient care.”

The Duke Health Cary expansion reflects the organization’s broader strategy to improve access to care in Wake County and reduce patient travel times for acute and specialty services. According to the health system, the closer proximity of services may support better treatment adherence, reduce out-of-pocket travel costs, and contribute to improved patient recovery.

“Cary, and the broader Wake County community, is one of the fastest-growing areas in North Carolina,” said Craig Albanese, M.D., chief executive officer of Duke University Health System. “We want to grow together by providing greater access to the world-class care Duke Health is known for.”

Future phases of development may include additional specialty services to meet evolving local needs, according to Duke Health officials.
