The Renton, Washington-based health system Providence is cutting approximately 600 full-time-equivalent positions as part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at addressing rising costs and declining reimbursement rates.

The decision affects both administrative and some patient-care roles across its operations in seven states.

According to the organization, the reductions represent a small fraction of Providence's 125,000-person workforce. The health system noted that many impacted employees may be eligible for reassignment, citing more than 5,000 open positions currently available within the organization. Additional transition support is being offered to affected staff.

“We do not take decisions like this lightly and recognize that behind every role is a person, colleague, friend and caregiver whose contributions have helped carry out our mission,” said chief operating officer Dr. Darryl Elmouchi. “These difficult but necessary steps are part of a comprehensive approach to financial sustainability that will enable our family of organizations to better reinvest in and revitalize the front lines of care.”

The cuts come amid growing financial strain for health systems nationwide. Providence cited several external pressures, including anticipated federal cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, increased labor costs stemming from new staffing regulations in West Coast states, inflation-related supply price hikes, and ongoing payment delays from commercial insurers.

The restructuring is part of a multipronged strategy Providence says is focused on long-term sustainability. This includes efforts to streamline operations, limit discretionary expenses, and improve revenue capture. Leadership emphasized that the organization will continue to evaluate operational decisions in alignment with its mission and the evolving needs of the communities it serves.

Providence operates a network of hospitals, clinics, and other care sites throughout the Western U.S., and has roots dating back nearly 170 years.
