ChristianaCare plans to invest more than $865 million over the next three years to expand health care access across Delaware, doubling the amount it has spent in the state since 2022.

The Wilmington, Delaware-based nonprofit health system announced that the new investment will support a wide range of projects, including facility construction, service line growth, and workforce expansion.

The first major project will be a new 87,000-square-foot health center in Middletown, adjacent to ChristianaCare’s existing freestanding emergency department. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the facility expected to open in early 2027. Middletown Mayor Ken Branner noted the expansion is anticipated to bring over 70 full-time jobs to the area.

The investment plan aligns with ChristianaCare’s ongoing strategy to increase access to primary care, behavioral health, specialty services, and ambulatory surgical care. The health system cited community health needs assessments and demographic shifts, including an aging population, as key drivers behind its focus on access and infrastructure.

“Our commitment to double our investment in our Delaware neighbors over the next 3 years is guided by the belief that providing care close to home — or even in the home — is how we improve health and make care affordable,” said president and CEO Dr. Janice Nevin.

Recent projects under ChristianaCare’s prior $375 million investment include a pediatric care center, a sleep medicine facility, and the launch of MR-guided focused ultrasound services for movement disorders. The health system also operates a joint urgent care network with GoHealth, and opened a 33-bed critical illness recovery hospital in Wilmington in partnership with Select Medical.

ChristianaCare currently operates 36 primary care practices serving around 200,000 patients, and its Hospital Care at Home program continues to expand hospital-level services into residential settings.

Jennifer Schwartz, chief strategy officer, emphasized the system’s continued commitment to Delaware, even as it grows regionally. “Our growth across the region is an important way that we ensure our ability to continue to invest in the community and meet your needs,” she said.
