BD plans to invest over $35 million to expand manufacturing of prefilled flush syringes at its Columbus, Nebraska facility, a move that will add roughly 50 new jobs and boost U.S. production capacity of its BD PosiFlush prefilled syringes.

The investment will fund new production lines and process upgrades aimed at increasing output by hundreds of millions of units annually, according to BD. The devices are commonly used in hospitals for catheter care and medication delivery.

“BD PosiFlush Syringes are essential to everyday patient care for keeping catheters clear and safely delivering medications,” said Eric Borin, worldwide president of BD Medication Delivery Solutions. “Our latest investments boost U.S. production capacity and reinforce our commitment to a reliable supply for healthcare providers and the patients they serve.”

Prefilled flush syringes are widely used in hospitals to help prevent catheter-related complications. Because they deliver fluids directly into the bloodstream, quality control in manufacturing is a key concern. BD noted that its PosiFlush syringes are produced in a fully automated process designed to reduce contamination risks, and each unit undergoes multistep inspection.

The Columbus site, which BD says is the largest manufacturer of prefilled flush syringes in the U.S., has been in operation for more than 75 years. The latest investment builds on more than $80 million the company has already put into expanding PosiFlush capacity over the past three years, including a 10% increase in U.S. output in the last year alone.

Earlier this year, the Franklin Lakes, New Jersey-based company announced plans to invest $2.5 billion over five years to expand domestic manufacturing, including more than $40 million for syringe, needle, and IV catheter production. BD operates more than 30 manufacturing and distribution facilities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, employing over 10,000 people.
