CHRISTUS Health and University Health have reached an agreement for the sale of the former CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center campus, following unanimous approval from the Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers on July 29. The transaction is expected to close in late September or early October.

The San Antonio-based hospital, a 236,000-square-foot acute care facility built in 1986, has been closed since April when CHRISTUS consolidated services into other nearby hospitals. The sale also includes two adjoining medical office buildings on the 45-acre site.

CHRISTUS Health, a faith-based nonprofit health system, said it sought a buyer that would maintain a mission-focused approach to serving the community. “CHRISTUS Health has proudly served San Antonio for over 150 years, and so it was important for us to find a buyer that shares our vision for the community and the region,” said Ernie Sadau, president and CEO.

University Health, the county’s public hospital district, plans to use the property to help manage growing patient volumes at University Hospital. “The location and size of the CHRISTUS Medical Center property, and the timing of this opportunity could not be better as we are experiencing unprecedented growth in patient volumes,” said Edward Banos, president and CEO of University Health.

The acquisition comes as University Health continues a $1.5 billion expansion program that includes two new hospitals scheduled to open in 2027 and two new public health and multispecialty centers opening this fall. Funding for the purchase will come from existing resources, with no tax rate increase planned.

Bexar County Judge Peter Sakai called the agreement “a game-changing opportunity” for the hospital district to expand access to care in the community. University Health expects to announce specific plans for the Medical Center campus and future service offerings after the sale is finalized.
