Novant Health Cancer Institute has become the first healthcare provider in the U.S. to implement RapidArc Dynamic, a newly developed form of radiation therapy from Varian, a Siemens Healthineers company.

The technology was introduced on Aug. 25 at the Derrick L. Davis Cancer Institute in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It combines enhanced pretreatment modeling with real-time beam-shaping capabilities through a dynamic collimator, allowing clinicians to deliver radiation with greater precision while limiting exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

“Nearly half of all cancer patients receive radiation therapy,” said Lalithkumar Kumaraswamy, Ph.D., director of physics at the Novant Health Cancer Institute. “This statistic fuels our resolve to innovate and provide world-class care for our patients close to home. This innovative technology allows us to plan and deliver treatments with even greater accuracy, speed and safety across a wide range of cancer types.”

Unlike earlier systems that required patients to remain still for extended periods while the linear accelerator repositioned multiple times, arc-based systems deliver treatment more efficiently by rotating continuously around the patient. RapidArc Dynamic builds on that foundation with AI-assisted planning tailored to each patient’s anatomy and tumor characteristics.

“Many hands came together to make this milestone possible,” said Alan Baydush, Ph.D., chief physicist for the Novant Health Cancer Institute in the Triad. “Our radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists and therapists are part of a broader cancer treatment team that includes surgeons, medical oncologists, genetic counselors, nurse navigators and more. Together, we take a comprehensive approach to cancer detection and treatment, ensuring our patients receive remarkable, best-in-class care at every step of their journey.”

The technology is approved for use across several tumor types, including cancers of the brain, breast, lung, head and neck, prostate, and gastrointestinal tract.

The Winston-Salem–based institute is part of Novant Health’s larger network, serving communities across North Carolina and South Carolina.
