Barnes-Jewish Hospital will begin welcoming patients in October to its newly completed Plaza West Tower, a 16-story facility designed to expand critical care services and improve the patient experience on the Washington University Medical Campus in St. Louis.
The project is part of BJC HealthCare’s broader Campus Renewal initiative, which aims to modernize clinical infrastructure across the region. The new tower adds 224 private inpatient rooms and 56 intensive care unit rooms, primarily serving heart and vascular patients. It also includes advanced imaging capabilities and upgraded surgical prep and recovery areas.
Hospital leaders say the new space supports the institution’s role as a major referral center for patients with complex conditions, while also allowing for better collaboration among multidisciplinary care teams.

“The growing demand for critical care requires facilities that are as sophisticated and innovative as the care that we offer,” said Dr. John Lynch, president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
The facility was designed with input from frontline staff and includes features intended to improve both patient outcomes and staff workflow. Patient rooms are fully private and incorporate bedside technology to streamline care. Additional amenities include two rooftop gardens, a new cafeteria, and dedicated family spaces with sleeping, cooking, and laundry accommodations.
The new tower also includes infrastructure to better accommodate surges in patient volume and isolation needs during future pandemics.
Construction of the facility involved more than 3,700 workers and is part of a larger economic development strategy. BJC estimates the Campus Renewal Project has generated nearly $2 billion in economic impact to date.
Plaza West Tower stands on the site of the former Queeny Tower and complements other recent expansions on campus, including the adjacent Parkview Tower and St. Louis Children’s Hospital additions completed in 2018.
Barnes-Jewish Hospital is staffed exclusively by physicians from Washington University School of Medicine, which maintains one of the largest NIH-funded research portfolios in the country.
