Fujifilm Biotechnologies has officially opened its new commercial-scale cell culture manufacturing site in Holly Springs, North Carolina, marking a major expansion of its biopharmaceutical production capabilities in the U.S.

The facility, part of a $3.2 billion investment announced in phases, begins operations with eight 20,000-liter mammalian cell culture bioreactors for drug substance and drug product manufacturing. A second phase, first detailed in 2024, will double the number of bioreactors to 16. The site is expected to add finished goods production capabilities by 2026.

Company officials, including chairman Toshihisa Iida and CEO Lars Petersen, were joined at the ribbon-cutting by North Carolina Governor Josh Stein and other state and local leaders. The facility currently employs more than 680 workers, with plans to reach 1,400 employees by 2031.

“This overall project will create 1,400 new, good-paying jobs in North Carolina by 2031 and will grow our state’s economy by $4.7 billion over the next decade,” said Stein. “Fujifilm isn’t just strengthening the workforce of today — it’s investing in the workforce of tomorrow.”

The site was built using Fujifilm Biotechnologies’ modular “kojoX” design platform, aimed at accelerating project timelines. According to Petersen, the design helped reduce planning time by 70 percent and enabled rapid construction, completing the project in under five years.

The facility also emphasizes sustainability. Fujifilm Biotechnologies stated that it will offset all carbon emissions from its electricity use through a virtual power purchase agreement, with a solar park slated to begin operation by April 2026.

The Holly Springs facility adds to the company’s global network of biomanufacturing sites, which includes operations in Denmark, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere in the United States.

Fujifilm Biotechnologies is a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, which has committed over $8 billion globally to expand its contract development and manufacturing business.
