Medtronic launches new TAVR guidewire aimed at improving valve deployment stability

Medtronic has released the Stedi Extra Support guidewire, designed to improve stability and control during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedures.

According to the company, the guidewire is intended to enhance the performance of its Evolut TAVR system but is compatible with all commercially available TAVR platforms. It features a stiff proximal section, a gradual transition zone, and a curved distal tip to help maintain control and reduce movement during valve deployment.

The Evolut platform is used for the treatment of severe aortic stenosis, a condition where the aortic valve narrows and restricts blood flow, often requiring intervention to prevent heart failure. The condition can be fatal within two years if left untreated.

Dr. Tanvir J. Bajwa, interventional cardiologist at Advocate Health, said the device “enhances stability and predictability during valve deployment, especially when paired with techniques like simplified cusp overlap, and reinforces procedural consistency with the Evolut platform.”

Bench testing using simulated anatomy showed reduced ventricular motion, better alignment, and improved deployment stability when using the Stedi wire compared to less supportive options. Data also suggest that when paired with the cusp overlap technique, stiffer guidewires like the Stedi may be linked to a lower 30-day rate of permanent pacemaker implantation.

The guidewire received clearance from the FDA and is now available in the U.S. It was introduced during the 2025 Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics conference in San Francisco.

Jorie Soskin, vice president and general manager of Medtronic’s Structural Heart business, said the product "delivers enhanced stability and predictability while seamlessly integrating into existing Evolut workflows."
