Stryker has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Amplitude Vascular Systems, a Boston-based medical device company developing intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) technology for the treatment of calcified peripheral arterial disease.
The Portage, Michigan-based company said the acquisition is intended to broaden its peripheral vascular portfolio by adding a revascularization platform focused on calcium modification. The technology is not yet cleared for clinical use in all markets but is expected to complement Stryker’s existing offerings once regulatory approvals are secured.
Amplitude’s IVL system uses pulsed carbon dioxide-generated pressure waves delivered through a balloon catheter to disrupt calcified plaque. The approach is designed to improve vessel expansion while maintaining catheter deliverability and procedural efficiency, according to the company.

IVL has gained traction in recent years as physicians increasingly incorporate calcium modification techniques into complex peripheral and coronary interventions. Industry observers expect continued growth in the segment as adoption expands across treatment settings.
“This acquisition represents an important step in advancing our vision to build a comprehensive peripheral vascular platform and address significant unmet clinical needs,” said Kevin Lobo, chair and CEO of Stryker. “Combining this innovation with Stryker’s scale and clinical expertise, we believe we can help expand treatment options for physicians and improve care for patients with calcified peripheral arterial disease.”
Amplitude Vascular Systems, founded in 2017, has focused on developing devices for severely calcified arterial disease and is backed by several investment firms, including BioStar Capital and Cue Growth Partners.
The companies said the transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions. Both organizations will continue operating independently until the deal is finalized.
