CaroMont Health outlined a $200 million investment to expand its oncology services, marking one of the largest capital projects in the Gastonia, North Carolina-based system’s history.
The initiative aims to increase capacity and consolidate cancer care services across its footprint.
The health system currently treats more than 1,500 cancer patients annually across five counties in two states. With cancer incidence rising in Gaston County, leaders said the expansion is intended to address growing demand. Once completed, the project is expected to double annual oncology capacity to about 3,000 new cases.

The investment includes three primary components. CaroMont plans to open a hematology and oncology clinic in Belmont, located within the medical pavilion on the campus of CaroMont Regional Medical Center–Belmont. The system is also developing a 125,000-square-foot cancer center on the main Gastonia campus, designed to bring multiple oncology services into a single location. In addition, a new radiation therapy center is planned for Belmont, which would expand radiation treatment capacity by more than 30%, pending state regulatory approval.
Chris Peek, CEO of CaroMont Health, said the project is intended to improve coordination of care and access to services closer to where patients live. “Our community deserves world-class cancer care, and this investment is our commitment to making that a reality,” Peek said.
Dr. Todd Davis, chief physician executive, said consolidating services into purpose-built facilities could support clinical collaboration and streamline the patient experience. “It allows us to enhance every dimension of the care experience, from the clinical expertise and technology patients depend on, to the way they move through their treatment journey,” Davis said.
The Belmont hematology and oncology clinic is expected to open in June. Additional timelines for the cancer center and radiation therapy facility have not yet been disclosed.
