Bon Secours has started construction on a new patient tower at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Virginia, a $200 million project aimed at expanding emergency, maternity and critical care services on the Virginia Peninsula.
The four-story, 144,000-square-foot tower is expected to open in 2028. Bon Secours said the expansion will include upgrades to the hospital’s emergency department, labor and delivery services, neonatal intensive care and adult critical care units.
The project will double emergency department capacity from 15 to 30 beds and add 10 observation beds intended to improve patient flow and reduce wait times. Plans also call for a new labor and delivery unit and an expanded NICU that will increase from eight rooms to 10, including rooms designed for multiple births.

The hospital will also add a new ICU and implement a universal care model that allows critically ill patients to remain in the same unit throughout different levels of treatment.
Alan George, president of Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital, said the project is intended to modernize the facility while supporting future demand for care in the region.
“Today is about honoring the legacy of care this hospital has provided for generations while investing confidently in what comes next,” George said in a statement.
Bon Secours said the project will also redesign the hospital’s main and emergency entrances to improve access and navigation for patients and visitors. Updated patient rooms are planned with additional space for families and caregivers.
Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones said the expansion reflects ongoing investment in the city’s healthcare infrastructure.
“Bon Secours has long been a trusted healthcare provider in our city, and this project will ensure residents continue to have access to high-quality care where they live, work and play,” Jones said.
The project is part of broader investment efforts by the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Foundation, which is continuing fundraising activities tied to the hospital expansion and other regional healthcare programs.
