Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago has filed a Certificate of Need application with the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to build a pediatric hospital, emergency department and outpatient center in Downers Grove.
The proposed campus would supplement the hospital's main campus in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood rather than replace existing services. The project carries an estimated cost of $480 million and would be financed through a combination of cash reserves, philanthropy and bond financing.
According to the application, the nearly 298,000-square-foot facility would include a 48-bed pediatric hospital with intensive care capabilities, a dedicated emergency department, surgical services, advanced imaging and outpatient specialty clinics. The site would also consolidate services currently provided at Lurie Children’s outpatient center in Westchester.

“At Lurie Children’s, we are committed to ensuring every child has access to the highest quality care when and where they need it,” said Tom Shanley, M.D., president and CEO of Lurie Children’s. “As pediatric healthcare needs continue to grow across our region, this proposed facility would allow us to meet families closer to where they live while advancing our mission to deliver exceptional care, advance research and improve the health of children.”
The Chicago-based hospital said the proposal is intended to expand access to pediatric specialty care in the western suburbs, where several hospitals have reduced or eliminated pediatric inpatient services in recent years. Lurie Children’s said the new facility would reduce travel times for families while providing inpatient, emergency, surgical and outpatient pediatric services closer to home.
“Children are not simply small adults, and they deserve care designed specifically for their unique needs,” said Marcelo Malakooti, M.D., chief medical officer at Lurie Children’s. “This proposed hospital would help ensure that more families can access pediatric specialists, advanced treatments and emergency care from teams dedicated exclusively to caring for children.”
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board will evaluate the proposal through the state's Certificate of Need process. Separately, the Village of Downers Grove is expected to review site plans and renderings as part of its zoning process in the coming months.
