(Practicum)
Practicum for Biomedical Engineering and Technology Management Issues (Practicum) is a near-1000-page compendium of management, technology and reference information. This comprehensive new reference work that contains chapters and guides for managing medical device safety, evidence-based medical equipment maintenance management, telehealth, ultrasound, infusion devices, defibrillators, computer networks and more aims to assist the biomedical community to provide top-notch service.

Rich Eng, General Manager of GE Healthcare's Monitoring Solutions and Diagnostic Cardiology Services wrote the foreword. Eng said the book is "designed for students, managers and the continuing professional education needs" of the biomedical community. GE Healthcare supported the completion of Practicum.

Leslie R. Atles, CCE, CBET who has worked in the field of biomedical/clinical engineering for the past 34 years edited the book.

The work features the writings of 30 authors who thoroughly cover information needed for technical/engineering education. Practicum includes updated adapted material from the 1995 edition of Affinity Reference Guide for Biomedical Technicians which Atles co-authored with Scott Segalewitz, chairman of Penn State University-New Kensington's biomedical engineering technology program.

"The list of authors reads like a who's-who' in our field," said Paul Kelley, Manager, Biomedical Engineering, Washington Hospital, Fremont, CA. "I thought that the breadth of information would be invaluable to my entire team. To gather this much information, you would have to buy a library of books."

John Noblitt, CBET, Biomedical Equipment Technology Director at Caldwell Community College, Hudson, NC uses Practicum as part of his curriculum on instrumentation and safety and standards. Noblitt said, "People picture biomeds sitting at an electronics bench changing out transistors, but so much of our real job focus on building bridges between the clinical and technological sides of our business. The scope of this book gives [students] insight on the motivations and priorities of their managers, clinicians, IT staff and other constituencies."

Practicum may be ordered online directly from the publisher, Kendall/Hunt Publishing Company.
