CNN's medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, MD won't become the surgeon general. He was the President's original choice but told Larry King that he was withdrawing to continue his medical practice, work as a journalist, and to spend time with his family.
Dr. Gupta had also run into some opposition because of news coverage he hosted that was critical of the idea of national health coverage, a key priority for the President.
