Symposium on Proton Radiotherapy Coming Up May 8

by Becky Jacoby, Reporter | April 07, 2009
Proton Radiotherapy
Anyone interested in oncology and proton therapy may find the upcoming symposium on The Promises and Perils of Proton Radiotherapy a must-attend event. The symposium is scheduled for May 8-9 in Baltimore.

Proton therapy is the recommended and safer treatment to target smaller tumors. It reduces exposure to healthy tissue thus lowering the risk of secondary cancer. Since facilities offering this modality are increasing, practitioners will want to keep up to date.

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) sponsors the symposium which will feature a panel of public health, clinical and research experts who will debate the potential and disadvantages of proton therapy including best practices, medical equipment, clinical trials and controversies. Among those participating on the panel will be Dr. Eric Klein, Washington University, MO; Dr. Christopher Rose, Valley Radiotherapy Associates Medical Group, CA; and Dr. Jatinder Palta, University of Florida Health Science Center, FL.
