Both leading OEMs protect their "secret formulas" for lens filters and coatings that improve visualization in highly specialized applications. In addition, technologies such as high-definition video are being integrated into surgical microscopy systems.
The OPMI Lumera enables surgeons to optimize their view for varying surgical steps and different eye conditions. The surgeon's improved view not only helps during complex cases, but also routine surgeries.

An example of an advanced application is vascular fluorescence. Leica has come up with an alternative to traditional fluoroscopy, using a drug in conjunction with a microscope filter to illuminate blood flow to confirm blockage (in treating aneurysms) or to ensure blood flow (in reconstructive surgery). Instead of wheeling in a fluoroscope or radiological imaging device, the microscope can do the job of checking to see if surgery is complete. One day this approach may also be used in illuminating and treating glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor notoriously hard to pinpoint.
Taking on the Leaders
In addition to the market leaders, other players such as Olympus, Seiler and Wallach also provide these instruments. Interesting ancillary players and cut-price alternatives are also jostling for position. Overall, Japanese manufacturers have improved their optics and offerings over the years. Some manufacturing activity in China is also gaining momentum and attention.
For example HSD Microscopes, an American group, is distributing a factory new microscope that is made in China and designed to compete with the major OEMs in the dental and ENT markets.
"We are attacking the dental market in a big way and I think we are on the crest of a wave of acceptance for dental microscopy here in the U.S.," said HSD principal Bill Tinker, who is also owner of the Tascosa Group, a used equipment seller. Tinker said HSD is looking for distributors for the new unit, the HSD Zumax Alpha.
Another China distributer is Zhongtian Optical Instrument Co. Ltd. The company has CE (European approval) but not FDA approval. Nevertheless, market watchers may want to keep an eye on its ENT and ophthalmic as well as multi-function microscopes for hand and plastic surgery.
"Japan has a long history of making this kind of surgical equipment. China is catching up," assures Bill Shao, Sales Manager for Zhongtian. "Most Chinese products are cost effective. Our factory is developed from a factory for military service so its product is very reliable. We cannot say it is the most advanced in the world. But the quality is reliable, combined with competitiveness in its low cost."
