LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., December 1 2005--E-Z-EM, Inc., (Nasdaq: EZEM) has announced that a study presented at the 91st Scientific Sessions of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) confirmed the efficacy of the Company's VoLumen oral contrast in PET/CT imaging. VoLumen is a next generation low density barium sulfate suspension specifically designed for use as an oral contrast in Multidetector CT (MDCT) and PET/CT studies.

In a study entitled "Evaluation of the Effects of Oral Water and VoLumen on Bowel on PET-CT" by lead author Dushyant Sahani, MD and presented by Bindu Setty, MD, researchers quantitatively and qualitatively compared bowel distension on co-registered PET-CT images in patients given VoLumen or water as oral contrast agents. Researchers also compared both water and VoLumen against a control group to determine if either oral contrast affected the rate of glucose uptake by the bowel--a potential source of artifacts in PET imaging. The researchers found that VoLumen provided superior bowel distension than water in all segments of bowel they analyzed, while at the same time produced no significant difference in glucose uptake when compared with the control group. The researchers concluded that "VoLumen was preferable to water for PET/CT as an oral contrast agent, as it provided improved bowel distension while avoiding contrast material-induced PET artifacts."
