O/R Lights: LED there be light

by Olga Deshchenko, DOTmed News Reporter | September 01, 2010

The new feature redistributes the power of the light quickly and is designed not to overpower any of the LEDs.

"Now you can really set it and you really can forget it because it already figured out what you need from an illumination level," he says.

Berchtold has a Chromophare line of O/R lights, which includes both LED and halogen options.

"Recent innovations include the first 360-degree Endlite for LED, an ambient lighting system that both projects low-level light down for the surgeon and up to the ceiling grid for the benefit of the surgical staff," says Campbell.

Skytron offers the Aurora Hybrid LED surgical lights unit, which allows the surgeon to control the focus and intensity of the light. The surgical lights last a minimum of 10 years, says Tomaszewski.

"Aurora II LED can be focused from 1 to 3 meters, while retaining maximum light intensity at extended distances, common for heart, vascular orthopedic, emergency trauma, neurosurgical and urological procedures," he says.

Steris Corporation introduced its Harmony LED Surgical Lighting and Visualization System in 2007. The company's newest product is the Harmony vLED Surgical Lighting System.

"[Harmony vLED] is very, very similar in optical performance, but the vLED system offers a simplified suspension and controls and is available at a lower price point than our Harmony LED system," says Walters. "It's a great product for emergency rooms and for ambulatory surgery centers and for some of our international markets, which are very price-sensitive."

Nuvo Surgical is a manufacturer of operating room equipment that also has a line of O/R LED lights. The company's technology enables the incorporation of the different LEDs - red, green and blue - even though the human eye can only see them as white LEDs, says Brett Messina, director of sales and marketing for Nuvo Surgical.

Nuvo's Verde lights offer an endoscopy mode in the light, which enables surgeons to turn off the blue and red LEDs with the touch of a button, allowing only the green LEDs to shine.

"During arthroscopic cases and minimally invasive cases, it generates a green hue across the room," says Messina. "The reason we use green is because the human eye can see more shades of green than any other color. This allows for better vision of the images on the flat panel monitors, and it provides ambient lighting in the room for other staff members to perform their tasks," says Messina.

Another unique feature of the company's lights is the service mode.
"A characteristic of any LED is that you don't change the bulbs with LEDs, as they start to decay over a period of time," explains Messina. "We've been able to develop a service mode that allows us to maintain the lumen output throughout the life of the light. It's the only light in the industry that has this feature."
