The O/R in HD
The O/R is becoming more complex in its technological advancements, enabling surgeons to rely on video transmissions to see and do more.
"Video integration has been around for a long time but the technology is changing very rapidly in terms of technical requirements," says Steris Corporation's Jesurun. "Developments in consumer electronics and television are also affecting O/R technology. For example, the move from standard definition to high-definition cameras and monitors requires new signal formats and more bandwidth. It also creates challenges to transmitting consistently high-quality images in virtually real time to monitors. It's a very rapidly changing technology," he says.
The company has had an in-light video camera on the market for several years. This summer, it's introducing its H-D in-light camera.
"The transmitted image is very crisp and clean, so if you're teaching or presenting on a big-screen monitor, as they do in teaching facilities, you'll still have excellent image resolution," says Walters.
Berchtold offers an HD in-light camera that was introduced to the market earlier this year. It is retrofittable to all of the company's E-series lights prepared for standard-definition companies, says Campbell.
