(CHICAGO) - Rush University will recognize 596 graduating students at its 39th commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 11, at 2 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion, 525 South Racine in Chicago.
Dr. Larry Goodman, president of Rush University and CEO of Rush University Medical Center, and Dr. Thomas Deutsch, provost of Rush University, dean of Rush Medical College and senior vice president of medical affairs at Rush University Medical Center, will preside over the ceremony and award degrees to students graduating from the University's four colleges. Established in 1972, Rush University is comprised of Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health Sciences and the Graduate College. This year's commencement kicks off the 40th anniversary celebratory year for Rush University in conjunction with the opening of Rush University Medical Center's new hospital building.
This year's commencement speaker and recipient of the Rush University Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters is Richard H. Carmona, MD, MPH, FACS, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States (2002-2006). Carmona is currently the Distinguished Professor at the Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health at the University of Arizona. He is also a Professor of Surgery and Pharmacy at the University of Arizona, Vice Chairman of Canyon Ranch and CEO of its Health Division.

The graduating students will be receiving the Doctor of Medicine degree from Rush Medical College and the Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees from the College of Nursing. Additionally, degrees conferred by the College of Health Sciences include the Bachelor of Science in medical laboratory science, perfusion technology, and vascular ultrasound; the Master of Science in clinical nutrition, health systems management, medical laboratory science, occupational therapy, perfusion technology, respiratory care and speech-language pathology; and the Doctor of Audiology. Degrees conferred by the Graduate College include the Master of Science in anatomy and cell biology, biotechnology, clinical research, and pharmacology and the Doctor of Philosophy in anatomy and cell biology, biochemistry, immunology/microbiology, molecular biophysics and physiology, neurosciences, nursing and pharmacology.
Carmona has extensive experience in public health, clinical sciences and health care management. This experience, combined with his commitment to prevention as an effective means to improve public health and reduce health care costs while improving the quality and quantity of life, led him to issue many landmark Surgeon General communications during his tenure. One such communication was the Surgeon General's Report about the dangers of second-hand smoke.
