The Food and Drug Administration has granted Canon U.S.A. Inc.'s TX-20 Full Auto Tonometer the green light. Recently presented at Vision Expo West, the compact device aims to evaluate ocular conditions that can affect intraocular pressure.

"As a strong advocate of health care, we are excited to bring the new TX-20 Tonometer to the forefront of the U.S. market to help health care professionals diagnose and monitor eye disorders, such as glaucoma," Tsuneo Imai, senior director and general manager, Medical Systems Division, Canon U.S.A., said in a statement.

The Lake Success, N.Y.-based company's 33-pound non-contact tonometer employs soft air puffs to measure IOP. A warning message is displayed upon high-pressure detection and the warning system can be activated through the operator's preferred threshold value. In Full Auto mode, the system enables IOP measurement of both eyes by simply pushing the start button.
