A member of ASA since 1985, Dr. Lema has served in numerous leadership positions. He was ASA president in 2007 and ASA Newsletter editor from 1997 to 2003. Lema was also president of the New York State Society of Anesthesiologists in 2000 and the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine in 2004.
With more than 175 papers published in both basic research (muscle physiology) and clinical practice (pain management), Lema is a recognized expert in palliative care. He has lectured at more than 225 institutions around the world and was selected as treasurer of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists in 2010.

Lema received a doctorate in physiology from the University of Buffalo and then earned a medical degree at the Downstate Medical Center/State University of New York. He completed his internship at Staten Island University Hospital in New York, followed by his residency at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, where he was awarded the Parker B. Francis Research Fellowship in Anesthesiology.
