A maker of PET scanners specially designed for breast imaging said it has made its first installations in Europe.

Naviscan Inc. said Wednesday one of its Positron Emission Mammography scanners arrived at Radiologie und Nuklearmedizin, an imaging center in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and another at Medica, a clinic in Istanbul.

The San Diego-based company originally debuted its PEM scanners in Europe last March at the European College of Radiology's annual meeting.

In September, Naviscan announced that the PET scanner and its PET-guided biopsy accessory both received the CE mark. The scanner has been available commercially in the United States for the past five years.

Naviscan says its product compares favorably with breast MRI in detecting lesions. The scanner's resolution is about 1.6 millimeters, or the width of a grain of rice, according to the company.
