Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has become the first health care facility in the UK to install GE Healthcare's Discovery MR750w, a new wide-bore 3T MRI.

GE made the announcement March 1, only a few days after revealing the first U.S. commercial installation at an imaging facility in Brooklyn.

The GE Discovery MR750w features a 70-centimeter opening for bigger or claustrophobic patients, as well as the company's ergonomic GEM radiofrequency coils. Six of the units have been installed in Europe, out of 20 worldwide.

The National Health Service-run public hospital in Norwich bought the machine to replace an older scanner, a GE rep told DOTmed News. It'll be used both for clinical exams and for research on joint themes such as obesity and gut function, according to a GE press release.

The GE Discovery MR750w received Food and Drug Administration clearance last fall.
