FDA approves DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System

by Kristen Fischer, DOTmed News | April 23, 2012
A next-generation mobile digital X-ray machine with a fully collapsible column - the first of its kind in the industry - has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The CARESTREAM DRX-Revolution Mobile X-ray System delivers advanced image quality, enhanced maneuverability and useful features to boost efficiency. The machine also boasts an easy-to-position tube head and a compact design for improved visibility and safety.

"The machine's long tube head reach enables better positioning and a tube head monitor allows the technologist to review and approve images at the bedside," said Helen Titus, worldwide marketing director for digital capture systems at Carestream.

To operate the mobile X-ray system, the radiologist simply signs in with a password or card swipe. The DRX-Revolution uses the same software interface and wireless detectors as other Carestream DRX products, so most technologists are already familiar with its platform.

The machine has 360-degree turn capability that can be easily positioned in spaces crowded with other medical equipment. The 32kW generator, dual focal spot tube, DRX detector, and EVP Plus image processing lets the radiographer align the tube with a grid, which enhances image quality and reduces the amount of retakes needed. Titus said that the alignment goes a long way to produce a more superior digital image.

The DRX detector comes in both gadolinium oxysulfide scintillator or cesium iodide formats so technologists can tailor the dose of radiation based on the patient's needs.

Two monitors - a 19" monitor and an 8" tube head monitor - offer two work zones to improve productivity and performance. The unit also includes generous storage space for paperwork, gloves, sanitizer, and more. The column collapses when the unit is moved to ensure a clear view during relocation.

"The DRX-Revolution satisfies specific needs voiced by dozens of radiology professionals who were involved in the product's design process," said Diana Nole, president of digital medical solutions at Carestream Health.

Health care providers in the U.S. can now place orders for the DRX-Revolution, as can those in Canada and Europe where the equipment has already been approved.
