UPMC has opened a new heart institute at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, marking the largest expansion of the hospital’s Lawrenceville campus since its relocation from Oakland in 2009.
The $85 million UPMC Children’s Heart Institute is a three-story, 50,000-square-foot facility designed to support care for pediatric patients with congenital and acquired heart conditions. Hospital officials said the institute will provide services spanning prenatal diagnosis through adulthood, bringing together clinical, diagnostic and procedural capabilities in a single location.
According to UPMC, the facility includes three cardiac catheterization laboratories, one of which is directly connected to a cardiac MRI suite. The institute also features nine private pre- and post-procedure rooms, expanded waiting and support areas, and additional space for clinical staff.

An upper-level outpatient clinic includes 14 exam rooms, eight echocardiography labs and a cardiac exercise laboratory. UPMC said the space will also house a pediatric cardiac rehabilitation program scheduled to open in 2027.
“This is a powerful moment for our hospital and for the families we serve,” said Diane Hupp, president of UPMC Children’s Hospital. “The Heart Institute reflects our commitment to delivering seamless, coordinated care for children and adults with heart conditions—bringing together expert teams, advanced technology and thoughtfully designed spaces that support healing, innovation and hope for every patient and family who walks through our doors.”
UPMC Children’s Hospital treats thousands of pediatric cardiology and heart surgery patients annually. Hospital leaders said the new institute is expected to increase capacity and support care for patients with complex heart conditions from western Pennsylvania, other U.S. regions and international markets.
The project was funded through UPMC investment and philanthropic support raised through the UPMC Children’s Hospital Foundation.
