MultiCare Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital has opened a new freestanding pediatric hospital in Tacoma, Washington, transferring patients from its longtime facility at Tacoma General Hospital into the new building over the weekend.

The six-story, 250,000-square-foot hospital replaces the previous inpatient space across the street and marks the first time the organization has operated from a stand-alone children’s hospital since its original campus opened in 1955. Pediatric transport teams moved 61 patients from intensive care and medical-surgical units into the new facility on May 18, while the pediatric emergency department began accepting patients earlier that morning.

The Tacoma-based health system said the new hospital is intended to expand access to pediatric specialty and acute care across the Pacific Northwest. Mary Bridge Children’s serves as Western Washington’s designated Level II pediatric trauma center and is the only pediatric hospital in Southwest Washington.

“This hospital comes at a critical moment as we expand to meet growing demand for children’s specialty care and serve as the referral center for some of the most complex pediatric cases in our region,” said Jeff Poltawsky, president and market leader of Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Network.

The hospital includes 82 licensed inpatient beds across medical-surgical and pediatric intensive care units. Other features include a 29-room emergency department, eight operating rooms and a hybrid catheterization and interventional radiology suite.

The facility also includes behavioral health reduced-risk rooms, rooftop helipad access for critical transports and dedicated neonatal and pediatric transport services supporting air and ground transfers.

Hospital leaders said the building was designed around pediatric rehabilitation and family-centered care, with playrooms on each inpatient floor, an outdoor garden and a therapy gym for children recovering from illness or injury.

The hospital is located near Tacoma Link light rail and includes a 400-space parking garage for patients and visitors.
