Comecer buys Czech leaded glass company

by Brendon Nafziger, DOTmed News Associate Editor | June 01, 2012
Comecer SpA, an Italian maker of radiation protection devices, has beefed up its nuclear medicine division with a second acquisition in just over a month.

Last week, Comecer announced it bought Brita Trade, a company that manufactures lead shielding glass used in nuclear medicine equipment, from its Czech parent company, Brisk Tabor Group. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Leaded glass has a variety of radiation protection applications, from syringe-shield windows to stand-alone barriers; the viewing windows on Comecer's hot cells are made with leaded glass, the company told DOTmed News in an e-mail.

The purchase follows Comecer's April announcement that it bought Veenstra, a Dutch business that makes radiation monitors, dose calibrators and hot lab management software.

The Brita buy is also the second foreign company Comecer has acquired since Fondo Italiano d'Investimento SGR SpA, a private equity firm, bought a 33 percent minority stake in the business in March 2011.

In a press release, Comecer said the new deal was designed to ensure the "continuity of the existing personnel and the conservation of the specific know-how accumulated by Brita," which is based in Prague. The company has eight employees, Comecer said in an e-mail.

"Brita's expertise will allow Comecer to achieve important production synergies, thereby improving the competitive position of the Group," Alessia Zanelli, Comecer's CEO, said in a statement.

Comecer is headquartered in Castel Bolognese.
