Washington, DC (June 6, 2006) - The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) announced that the winners of the 2006 Advocacy Award are Dr. Carolyn Clancy, director of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and Maryland Delegate Shane Pendergrass from District 13.

"We are honored to present the 2006 Advocacy Award to both Dr. Clancy and Ms. Pendergrass who are visionary leaders in our field," said HIMSS President and CEO H. Stephen Lieber, CAE. "Dr. Clancy has been a true leader who is working to transform healthcare using information technology and has enthusiastically shared her vision with our members and worked closely with all stakeholders to advance the nation's healthcare system using information technology and management systems. Since the awards inception in 2003, Delegate Pendergrass is the first elected state official selected to receive this award. She was one of five state elected officials selected by the National Conference of State Legislatures to participate in HIMSS Project HITCh (Health Information Technology Champions) at the 2006 HIMSS Annual Conference & Exhibition in San Diego as well as the HIMSS Public Policy Forum in Washington, D.C., in October 2005."

The 2006 Advocacy Day Award was presented to both recipients by June Lowe, vice chair of HIMSS Board of Directors, on June 6 during HIMSS Advocacy Day Networking Reception.
