DOTmed: Tell us about this purchase.
Baxter Regional Medical Center is home to the only mobile mammography unit currently in the United States that has 3-D digital mammography technology on board.

The MMU travels to Baxter county and parts of Fulton, Izard, Marion, Searcy, Sharp and Stone counties in Arkansas as well as parts of Howell and Ozark counties in Missouri.

The MMU enables Baxter Regional to provide an alternative screening method to residents of the Twin Lakes area and to increase the awareness and utilization of early-detection screenings for breast cancer and other major health risks, such as osteoporosis.

DOTmed: Any final thoughts?
In 2011 alone, more than 2,467 mammographies were performed on the MMU. It became necessary to purchase a new MMU and BRMC became the first in the United States to house the 3-D digital mammography technology in a mobile setting. The new 2012 Mobile Mammography Unit continues to travel the 14 counties that BRMC serves but now with the latest in technology on board!

3-D digital mammography provides the best available technology for early detection, allowing physicians to see details in a way never before possible. The quality of 3-D digital mammography is far superior to analog, according to Dr. Kyle McAlister, Medical Director of Mammography at BRMC. 3-D images allow radiologists to see subtle changes that could be missed with conventional analog or digital mammography.
