DOTmed: Tell us about this purchase. Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) in Norfolk, VA, has a new MRI.
The new 3 Tesla MRI is the most powerful scanner available in routine clinical use. While CHKD’s existing 1.5T MRI can produce incredibly detailed images, the new 3T MRI scanner can produce enhanced images of extremely small structures in the foot or hand, can produce detailed images of soft tissue damage such as lesions in the cartilage, can assist in diagnosing some spine injuries and can produce images of brain structures to help diagnose conditions such as multiple sclerosis.
The 3T MRI uses magnets twice as powerful as those used to lift cars in junkyards. The 3T scanner will be used along with CHKD 1.5T MRI device.
MRI scanners use radio frequencies and a powerful magnetic field, not radiation, to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures.
DOTmed: Any final thoughts? What's just as important, this new 3T MRI scanner will provide something to benefit all children requiring imaging at CHKD: It will reduce wait times that have been increasing over the years as the use of MRIs has increased.
