Federal agents raid radiology center over fraud

by Lauren Dubinsky, Senior Reporter | March 13, 2014
On Tuesday, federal agents raided the Zwanger-Pesiri Radiology corporate headquarters in Lindenhurst, New York and confiscated its business records over allegations of multimillion-dollar fraud.

The Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Inspector General and FBI agents have teamed with prosecutors from the Eastern District to investigate claims that the company has been overbilling Medicare programs for X-ray, MRI and CT scan services, reported Newsday.

According to a second news source, News 12 Long Island, the agents did not say how long the company has been under investigation or how many people might have been affected.

However, they did disclose that a second location in Lindenhurst was also raided that same day.

Robert Nardoza, a spokesman for Eastern District federal prosecutors, declined to speak with DOTmed News about the allegations.

The company has 12 centers across Long Island and employs 70 radiologists. According to its website, Dr. Jerome Zwanger founded his radiology practice in 1953 and partnered with Dr. E.J. Pesiri in 1958, who retired in 2001. Dr. Zwanger continued to practice part time until he retired in 2008, and now his daughter, Susan Zwanger-Mendelsohn and her husband, Steven L. Mendelsohn, head the company.

This is not the only controversy for the company this year. In late January, it was brought to court for alleged negligence and medical malpractice that lead to a stroke, and later, death of a patient. The court case, however, has since been thrown out.
