EMT-Basic training at the EMSLRC is presented in a full-time format (40 hours per week) to allow for completion of training in about four weeks. Students from across the United States and abroad have attended this 138 hour program. This course adheres to the 1994 U.S. Dept. of Transportation EMT-Basic National Standard Curriculum.
The course consists of 120 hours of didactic (classroom & hands-on) training, 18 hours of in-hospital emergency room clinical time and 24 hours of recommended ambulance ride time. Students also are offered CPR Instructor training as an option through the American Heart Association. Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs written certification examination, which if successfully completed, will grant State of Iowa and National Registry of EMTs certification as an EMT-Basic.
Our EMT-Basic course is conducted on campus twice each year, from mid-May through mid-June, and again from early November through early December. Our full-time Paramedic Training Programs begin approximately one month after each EMT-Basic program ends. Qualified graduates of our EMT-Basic course may be offered the opportunity to progress immediately to our Paramedic Training Program. Check our calendar for the start date of our next EMT-Basic course.
Tuition: $600.00 U.S. includes textbooks and final practical exam costs. Tuition subject to change. Academic credit is not currently offered for the EMT-Basic or Paramedic programs.

Paramedic Training
We offer two unique training formats to accommodate individual needs. Our popular accelerated full-time program allows for completion of training in approximately 32 weeks. Our part-time outreach program would suit those who wish to remain in Iowa to work as "Iowa Paramedics," but have limited time and resources to devote to training. We conduct this program on campus and transmit it to up to 12 additional sites simultaneously throughout the State of Iowa utilizing the state's fiber optic communications system (ICN).
