Fellowship Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism
The Endocrine Fellowship Program (two years with an optional third year) aims to offer a balance of training in both the clinical and research aspects of endocrinology and metabolism. The scope and structure of the program is designed to fulfill requirements for board eligibility in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, as described in the AMA Graduate Medical Education Directory.
The goal of the program is to provide comprehensive, diligent, academically-based training and experience that would give opportunities to the fellows for developing the cognitive knowledge, psychomotor skills, interpersonal skills, professional attitudes, and practical competence required to function as consultants in the field of endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism.
Consultative and longitudinal care is provided in the outpatient clinics and fellows participate in both. Fellows are expected to follow his/her longitudinal patients for the duration of his/her training. Fellows typically attend 2 to 3 clinic sessions per week. The core clinics that provide continuity throughout training are the UIC General Endocrinology Clinic and the Jesse Brown VA General Endocrine Clinic. Other clinics offer exposure to special topics (pediatric endocrinology, gynecological endocrinology, and menopause), and demonstrate different medical settings.
The subspecialty training program in Endocrinology and Metabolism is a combined program among four institutions: The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, Jesse Brown Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center, Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, and Advocate Christ Hospital and Medical Center.
