Toshiba's Aplio Platinum Series ultrasound declared secure by U.S. Department of Defense

April 7, 2016, Toshiba -- Prioritizing the security of patient information, Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. has received authorization to operate (ATO) with the U.S. Air Force for its AplioTM Platinum Series ultrasound systems. Toshiba has previously secured Air Force ATO for its CT, MR and cardiovascular X-ray portfolios, as cybersecurity becomes a growing concern for hospitals that are increasingly connected through online networks.

By receiving ATO status, Toshiba’s Aplio 500 Platinum and Aplio 300 Platinum ultrasound systems have met the Air Force and Defense Health Agency’s (DHA) Platform Information Technology (PIT) guidelines for ensuring protection of Patient Health Information (PHI) and guarding against malware, viruses and malicious software. To meet these guidelines, Toshiba enhanced its Aplio Platinum Series ultrasound platform to include Microsoft Windows® 7 and application whitelisting security software to proactively identify and prevent viruses and malicious solicitations.

“We understand that medical imaging safety goes beyond radiation dose and extends to other areas, including cyber threats where medical imaging technology could be targeted,” said Satrajit Misra, vice president, Marketing and Strategic Development, Toshiba. “Cyber threats present a significant risk to not only healthcare provider’s data, but to patient safety when personal health and financial information is stolen, and the confirmation of ATO status will help our customers mitigate those risks.”
