Choice Medical Systems Inc., St. Petersburg, Fla. is highly specialized in diagnostic ultrasound for human and veterinary applications. They buy used equipment, then recondition and resell it. They also distribute new products including Aloka veterinary systems and Sony ultrasound accessories such as printers, VCRs and capturing devices.

New Aloka veterinary systems are sold exclusively in the Southeast but the market for other equipment is global. “We sell all over the world thanks to the Internet. It certainly spreads us out,” said Derrell McCrary, president and owner.

Most of their inventory comes from OEM trade-ins and keeping an ear to the ground. “Anytime we see something in the marketplace that is a good deal and a good price, we make offers,” McCrary said. End customers include dealers, clinics, private practitioners, veterinarians and some hospitals. “We don’t see a lot of our equipment going to hospitals because they buy new,” McCrary noted.

Choice Medical Systems has a staff of four plus a number of family members who keep a customer focus. As far as what sets the company apart, it’s no surprise. “I’ve been in the business 25 years and you build either a good or bad reputation in that time frame and to stay in business for that long it has to be good. We’ve always put out a good product and if there are problems we correct them with no hassles.”

McCrary has been following the trend toward 3-D and 4-D (live) ultrasound as it transforms diagnosis in OB/GYN, cardiology, urology and other fields. On the business side, the Internet has been the key technological advance.

“I fought a long time not to become a member of DOTmed and I kick myself many times for that because it has been very rewarding. We have certainly had a lot more clients come through that direction,” he said.
