Psychiatry Residency Program

by Akane Naka, Project Manager | December 26, 2006

Residents are selected each year in a separate match for the Resident Fellowship Track. The Resident Fellowship Track begins with two rotations of two months each during PGY-I or PGY-II in two different laboratories. The purpose is to expose residents to the research programs in two different laboratories and to give them a basis for choosing a mentor for further research. The choice of a research mentor is made at the end of the second year. In PGY-III the resident receives 25 percent protected time to develop and begin a research project. In PGY-IV the resident has ninety percent of the time reserved for research. In PGY-V and PGY-VI the resident will have full time for research with the aim of attaining an academic position and independent funding. The resident in this track will have the opportunity to present at the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds during the PGY-IV and VI years.

Residents for the Resident Research Track will be identified during the interview process, orientation, and PGY-I. In PGY-II residents will choose up to two, one-month research electives. At the end of year two the residents will apply to be on the research track. The applicants will be screened and selected by the Residency Training Director and the Departmental Research Committee based on the applicant's curriculum vitae and a one-page letter from the mentor and applicant describing their research plans. During PGY-III, the residents will have 25 percent protected time to do research. In PGY-IV, the resident will have 50 percent protected time for research and will have the opportunity to present at the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds. Many of the residents in the Resident Research Track may also pursue academic fellowships and research in subsequent years.

Application Information

The program is fully approved by the Accreditation committee on Graduate Medical Education. Residents are required to complete four years of graduate medical education to be eligible for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Candidates may apply at either the first or second postgraduate year level. The department accepts individuals at the second postgraduate year level who have completed a Categorical first postgraduate year in psychiatry elsewhere or who have completed some other first postgraduate year, including at least four months of pediatrics or internal medicine. In addition to the basic application procedures through the Electronic Residency Application Service, the Department of Psychiatry requires personal interviews for all applicants. Interviews are held with junior and senior faculty and with residents. They provide an opportunity for applicants to develop as accurate and comprehensive a picture of the department as is possible in a short visit.
