Charles E. Kahn Jr, MD, MS, co-chair of the American College of Radiology Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standards committee, was recently elected co-chair of the DICOM Standards Committee, which encompasses industry leaders and professional societies around the world.

The DICOM Standards Committee (DSC) is responsible for DICOM development and exists to create and maintain international standards for the communication of biomedical diagnostic and therapeutic information in disciplines that use digital images and associated data.

Many international diagnostic medical imaging vendors have incorporated these standards into their product design and most vendors actively participate in the enhancement of the standards.

Most of the professional societies throughout the world have supported and are participating in the enhancement of the standards as well. The ACR has a long history with DICOM and was a charter member of the DSC.

The ACR Committee on DICOM Standards is currently part of the ACR Commission on Medical Physics. An important activity of the committee has been the participation and leadership on the DICOM Standards Committee. Members of this committee have also provided the ACR representation to the ANSI Health Informatics Standards Board.
