Wheeling Hospital
Wheeling Hospital, established in 1850, was the first hospital in the Ohio Valley in operation between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and one of the first hospitals in West Virginia. Wheeling Hospital was the first hospital in West Virginia to open Coronary and Intensive Care Units. In 1994, it became the first hospital in the northern panhandle to provide open heart surgery.
The Wheeling Hospital family includes the current acute care facility opened in 1975, a Continuous Care Center, Kidney Dialysis Center, Howard Long Wellness Center and Wheeling Clinic. We also operate a hospital in bordering Ohio called Belmont Community Hospital along with professional offices in Bellaire, St. Clairsville, and Woodsfield.

Osteopathic Internship & Residency
Program Overview
The residency program is about more than fulfilling specific requirements. It's also about fulfilling the mission of Wheeling Hospital-Human Touch. We strive to extend medical education into reality, learning to interact with patients and colleagues and balancing technical skills with human touch.
Healing, Understanding, Ministry, Advance Technology, Nurturance
Tradition, Ongoing Education, Unity, Continuing Quality Care, Hope
The reason behind the program's continued success and the success of the residents is simple - faculty and residents are dedicated to learning and teaching.
Internship
Our Osteopathic Rotating Internship is fully integrated with our Osteopathic and Allopathic Family Medicine Curriculum. The internship provides broad and intensive training under the supervision of experienced faculty and teaching attending physicians.
Individuals who choose the Family Medicine track are expected to complete their Family Medicine training at Wheeling Hospital as resident in our Osteopathic Family Medicine Residency. In this way eligibility for both American College of Osteopathic Family Practice (ACOFP) and American Board of Family Practice (ABFP) certification can be achieved in three years.
First Year Curriculum:
Internal Medicine - 2 Months
Inpatient Pediatrics and Nursery - 2 Months
ER - 1 Month
General Surgery - 1 Month
ICU - 1 Month
Family Medicine Inpatient - 1 Month
Obstetrics - 1 Month
Gynecology - 2 Months

Residency
Osteopathic Residency graduates are able to achieve certification by both the ACOFP and ABFP at the completion of three years of training. The Osteopathic Resident will train side-by-side on an equal basis with their allopathic colleagues while gaining the additional skills unique to osteopathic medicine. The curriculum includes inpatient rotations balanced by rotations with private physicians in their offices. The rotation schedules for osteopathic residents parallel the allopathic residents as closely as possible, allowing for additional emphasis in Osteopathic Principles and Practice. The directors of both the allopathic and osteopathic programs work in close collaboration along with the core faculty.
