General Surgery Residency Program
The General Surgery Residency Program at Huron Hospital is fully accredited for five years of training, graduating two surgeons per year. The program has distinguished itself in many facets of general surgery, including trauma and critical care, and advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. The program recently received a commendation from the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for the numerous program improvements, and continued full accreditation with no citations (see article below).
Huron Hospital has maintained a well-rounded surgical residency program committed to teaching the art and science of surgery in a community hospital setting. The goal of our program is to graduate broadly trained general surgeons who will have attained the maturity, judgment and technical skills necessary to enter into independent practice.
The surgical residency program is designed to provide guided exposure to clinical experience in a structured manner over a five-year period. Theory and practice are learned side by side. The practice is a continuum of graded responsibility and technical complexity. A syllabus of reading, supplemented by regular conferences, grand rounds, lectures and daily bedside visits ensures the development of a system of knowledge acquisition. The degree of supervision is appropriate for the experience and aptitude of the resident.
